UK’s Starmer seeks fresh start with China as Trump shakes up global relations

Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer hailed “really good progress” during talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Thursday. After the 80-minute summit, China also announced that it will relax its rules for British citizens ​visiting ‍the ​country, allowing them to ​enter visa-free for trips under 30 days.

British ⁠Prime Minister Keir Starmer told Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday that he wanted to build a “sophisticated relationship” with Beijing to boost the UK economy, signalling a reset after years of strained ties.

On the key day of his four-day visit to China, the first by a British prime minister in eight years, Starmer held an 80-minute summit with Xi at the ​Great Hall of the People before they lunched together. Starmer said the pair chatted about football and Shakespeare, as well as business matters.

China agreed to relax rules to allow some visa-free ⁠travel for British citizens as part of a partnership ​deal which London hopes will help expand its ‍service sector.
