To bolster falling birth rate, China’s Sichuan allows unmarried people to legally have children

In the latest effort to lift the falling birth rate in China, health authorities of the country’s southwestern province of Sichuan will now allow unmarried people to legally have children and enjoy benefits reserved for married couples, reported Reuters on Monday.

The rule will now allow single individuals to raise a family if they want to have children. A 2019 rule earlier only covered married people who want to have children to legally allow them to give birth.

The revamping comes at a time when China is facing a fall in the marriage and birth rates.

A married couple or any individual who wants to have children will be allowed to have offspring from February 15. People can register with the government in China’s Sichuan if they want to have children. There is also no limit to the number of children they can register for, reported Reuters.
